Keep hope alive! The grass is still growing...U-S-A !

" If you put your ears close enough to the grass, you can hear the grass growing."~Leon, the Professional.

By Briana Booker

Although the USA soccer (futbol) team was down two goals and facing a sudden end to the World Cup, Landon Donovan became a fearless leader and turned around the match!

Donovan scoring early in the second half and Michael Bradley allowing the tie to happen in a second half comeback allowed the final score to be 2-2 between the USA and Slovenia. This final score was based on a controversial call, which denied the USA a comeback win!

In other words, chances of the USA team advancing are kept alive! Yes, the grass is still growing! Let's get this USA!

Bueno juego! Great game!

Buddha Bernstein's post game commentary: USA vs England World Cup.

By Zachary 'Buddha' Bernstein

I do not think I have ever been so happy to see a tie in any sport in my life! And yet, it is US 1, England 1 after 90-plus minutes. A point for all, and on to Algeria and Slovenia for what should be two considerably easier match ups.

Why the game ended 1-1, I am not entirely sure. After all, England scored only four minutes in and pressured insanely throughout, particularly later in the second half. And our goal was a complete fluke. I have not played soccer for some years, but I could have made that save. I would really not want to be Robert Green right about now.

But considering that England was as heavily favored as one team could be over another, I will take a draw, and I think the vast majority of US fans will do likewise. One point leaves us even with England, easily the team most favored to advance from the group. It is much better than nothing – which is probably what we should have gotten.

Final question: Now that it is a tie who sends the beer? Cameron or Obama?

U-S-A! Anything is possible: USA vs England World Cup!

On paper, the match up is incredibly one-sided. England – a country which lives, breathes, eats and sleeps futbol (that is soccer for the uninitiated),has some of the greatest teams of all time within its borders. England versus the United States – where we also live, breathe, eat and sleep futbol(but not the kind that the world’s looking at South Africa for), plays today! To call it an afterthought in the US is assuming people actually think about it.

Yet do not count out the red, white and blue just yet. For one, England is without arguably their best player – David Beckham, who was long ago ruled out for the tournament and has since been brought on as some sort of spy for the English team. I kid you not, folks – he was watching the US’s last tuneup against Australia.

For another, the US has dominated before. In the 1950 World Cup, the US team shocked England 1-0 in what is now called the “Miracle on Grass.” Of course, this is to say nothing of the fact that both teams would fail to qualify past the group stage, or that the US did not play in another World Cup for 40 years, or that,  it has been 60 years since the Miracle.

But why not? After all, the US has made its mark on the world of futbol, or at least started to. In 2002, the US team made it all the way to the quarterfinals, where they would lose to eventual finalist Germany. And while they were embarrassed by earning only one point in 2006, a repeat of that seems unlikely in a group that also includes Slovenia and Algeria.

Are the two teams evenly matched?

No. England still holds plenty of advantages over a US team that has been questioned as maybe a little raw or nervous. But so was South Africa compared to Mexico. Not only did they manage a draw, they scored first.

Do not expect a US championship. Probably do not expect a semifinal landing. If they manage a repeat of 2002, I  will be pretty gosh-darn astounded. Let us be honest – Brazil these guys ain’t. But if the one game that I have seen played (as of this writing) can tell us anything, it is that here, the question is not whether, but why not?

Ripe-fierce: World Cup referees on their A-Game!

By Briana Booker

There is plenty of action on the playing field during the World Cup but have you checked out these fierce referees keeping up with these elite soccer players? Amazing!

Referees can be twice the age of players but run more than the players themselves!

In fact, there are two fitness exams. One for speed and one for stamina! The Referees have to take these exams multiple times to make sure they can keep up with the players! The training becomes more vigorous by the years!

4 hours of exercise a day ranging from weight lifting to jogging is expected! Not to mention, while doing these tasks referees must monitor their own hearts! The average referee during a Futbol(soccer) game can run 12 miles a game! This physical task is five times more than the average soccer player, based on data from the U.S soccer foundation!

That's dedication! The referees must find their own time to train. They are athletes just as much as the elite players! I love the determination to do a job and do it well!

The referees recommend to others to eat protein, carbs and not many sugars to sustain nutrition and hydration! I am definitely checking them out more closely during the games!
