Thoughts on General Stanley Allen McChrystal.

By Briana Booker

General Stanley Allen McChrystal. I started this blog post with his full name for dramatic effect. Growing up, I knew I pissed someone off big time if my government name(full name) was used! This is one of those times for McChrystal.

Now, I will not condemn McChrystal for speaking his mind. Often saying and thinking what others are afraid to say or do, can bring both negative and positive progression. Never be afraid to stand up for something you are passionate about. However, I do condemn McChrystal intentionally putting on blast top officials such as Vice President Joe Biden in the well known Rolling Stone  Magazine.

I find it immature of him to put his frustration out in public viewing during a time of war. During a time of war it is crucial to pull a team together, not apart. From what I have read from the article, the previous Commander just sounds bitter for not being able to run operations within the Afghanistan war exactly how he wanted them. In fact, he might have a point that this war strategy is going no where. It may be a failed mission drastically, but what is a better solution?

It is easier to mock officials than to come up with a  more suitable method of addressing a dilemma. Mocking is for child's play. It was wrong of him to disclose critical numbers of troops needed to level out changes in the war environment. This type of information should have been directly addressed to the President not the freelance journalist Michael Hastings or the world.

Honestly, this is sad news. I hope this does not show the administration as weak and disconnected. And the President had every right to allow the resignation of McChrystal. This is not McChrystal's first constroversial action.

But please do read the article "The Runaway General," ( here ) it is definitely food for thought. The only person coming on top in this matter is Hastings for good journalism.

  1. Yes, McChrystal was showing his frustration but should have used his words carefully when mocking members of the Obama's administration. Either he should have vented that frustration at Obama personally or resign. Period. Robin

  2. Thank you for responding Robin.

I do not know all the exact facts leading up to this event, but from what I have read in the Rolling Stone article, McChrystal implies he never had the opportunity to really address the President about issues. He referred to the times he actually did see the president, it was for public appearance and nothing more. If that were true, there should have been an opportunity for them to get to know each other a bit better.

All and all, I have no clue how we are going to combat this war. It is terrifying to realize there is some truth to McChrystal's words.
